I highly recommend checking out Power Toys, it has much to offer including a Window layout manager and a OS X Spotlight-esque launcher. In my case, I hit Caps Lock, then ESC, and it was done! It also provides a visible list of mappings, and makes it easy to remove them if you make a mistake or change your mind. Keyboard Manager lets you define mappings intuitively you hit the key you want to remap, then press the key ou want to remap it to. I'm surprised some of these aren't built into Windows by default (maybe one day they will), but one of the utilities that Power Toys provided is Keyboard Manager. I then discovered Power Toys, a free set of programs for Windows 10 "power users" that provide a bunch of additional functionality. I really wanted a tool I could install, configure and forget about, that also gave me the ability to remap multiple keys should I need. I used uncap and that did the job, but it was a bit manual, and only (by design) offered limited functionality. With its intuitive interface, it never lets you feel like you are doing some geeky stuff like. A new screen will pop up ( Figure B ), and then you’ll be asked to enter a keystroke that you. SharpKeys is open-source software that lets you remap your keyboard functions as per your convenience. Click the dropdown menu to select the physical shortcut or click the Type key to type it. On Windows however, I could never find a solution. Figure A To remap a single key on your Windows 10 keyboard, click the Remap a key button. At the main Keyboard Manager screen, click the entry for Remap a shortcut. On Mac OS this remapping was easy the keyboard settings lets you remap certain keys, and tools like Karabiner Elements offered far more control. It even has two Teach Modes at the bottom to help you get started. Keyboard Manager seems to work correctly and also handles Ctrl-Alt-backslash, another key combination which can defeat remapping. And from the To this key, select the functionality that is to be mapped to that key. Under the Map this key section, select the key that is to be remapped in Windows. Now, click on Add to create a new key mapping on Windows. Caps Lock acted as Ctrl most of the time, but not when used with the X key. Download and install the SharpKeys software on your Windows PC. Then, find the key you want to be switched from the drop-down menu in front of Choose New Remapping. I used the registry 'Scancode Map' key for years, including on Windows 10, but one day it stopped working for Ctrl-X. First, click on the key you want to change. This started when I was learning Vim, and has become so commited to muscle memory that I can't go back from it and I'm rendered useless on any machine that doesn't have this mapped! With a different layout that may be easier for some people to understand, KeyTweak is another good option. I don't remap much, but one remapping that I've used now for about ten years is that I remap Caps Lock to ESC.
